The 2015 “Drey Kop” Hockey Tournament was a great success thanks to Howard Silver and Rod Sztabzyb who did the heavy lifting, organizing the Calgary based Jewish Hockey Tournament. The tournament finished with Calgary 1 defeating Calgary 2 in the final by a score of 6-5. There was no shortage of excitement in the Final with Calgary 2 pressing hard to tie the score in the last minute of play but unable to beat Dan Kowall in net.
In the tournament opener, Team Edmonton led Team Calgary 2 through most of the game only to bow to defeat from a last second snipe from Calgary’s Matt Silver which beat Team Edmonton’s Captain – Daniel Moser – with 0.07 seconds left on the clock in the third period!
When asked about the tournament Moser had this to say, “It was a great honour to represent the city of Edmonton, I only wish we could have done better. I truly believe we were the best team in the tournament, but you know the best team doesn’t always win, that’s why you play the game. We are excited to come back next year with a chip on our shoulders.”
Both Edmonton – who dressed in the Oiler home uniforms and Team Saskatchewan dressed in harvest green and Captained by Michael Shaw, have agreed to return in 2016 to challenge for the “Drey Kop.” Rod and Howard have indicated they hope to have teams from Vancouver and Winnipeg as well for next year.
