Letter to the Editor: Racist remarks should be met directly by our community leaders

(AJNews) – Dear Editor: Though I am not aware of any forum in your newspaper for responding to articles published in your newspaper, I felt compelled to respond to Jeremy Appel’s, “Alberta gov’t has a double standard.”

As a Jew, I understand the need to deal with delicate issues in private with the UCP as long as we are kept aware that our community leaders are addressing issues of racism with the gov’t.

It got me thinking: at what point would our Jewish leaders make our voices heard publicly?

Jews walk a fine line when it comes to racism, knowing that we have paid a heavy price for remaining silent in the past.  Right wing governments have been very hospitable to Jews and Israel, but have been known to harbour racist and anti-Semitic sentiment within their ranks.

I feel it important that racism and racist remarks by any government need to be met directly by our community leaders.

Regards,  David Aaron

  1. Remember that antisemitism is not exclusive to right wing politicians. Those on the left are usually more difficult to confront. None the less we must not remain silent. We must push back hopefully with the support of the greater community.
