Beth Shalom joins The Arthritis Society in Honouring Dr. Anthony Russell on March 26: RSVP today!

(EJNews) – The Joint Affair, hosted by Beth Shalom Synagogue and The Arthritis Society at the Fantasyland Hotel on Sunday, March 26, 2017, will recognize and honour Dr. Anthony S. Russell, a leader in his professional field of Rheumatology for almost 50 years. This event is about coming together to honour a deserving member of the Beth Shalom congregation, while profiling the advancements of arthritis research, and celebrating the power of community.

Growing up, Dr. Russell’s parents were actively involved in the Jewish community. Dr. Russell’s mother was even named the ‘Jewish Woman of the Year’ in the United Kingdom. At the age of 14, Dr. Russell attended Gateshead Yeshiva (now known as Gateshead Talmudical College), where he continued to study and grow in his faith.

The Russell family continues to share many milestones at Beth Shalom Synagogue. Dr. Russell’s wife, Alison, is an active member of the Beth Shalom Sisterhood and Dr. Russell previously held a Board Member position at Beth Shalom in 1977. The two were even married at the Synagogue in -40’C weather in December of 1972. Memorable in many ways, they enjoyed a wonderful dinner and dance. Their sons, Alex and Mark, also had their shared Barmitzvahs at Beth Shalom in 1989.

Dr. Russell’s commitment to his faith, as well as his practice in the field of rheumatology is something to be celebrated. The proceeds raised from this gala will be divided evenly between Beth Shalom and The Arthritis Society. Funds will support Beth Shalom’s ongoing infrastructure work and beautification of the building. It will also help establish the Dr. Anthony S. Russell Rheumatology Scholarship Fund which encourages advanced training and research opportunities for members or trainees within the Division of Rheumatology at the University of Alberta.

Beth Shalom Synagogue is proud to partner with The Arthritis Society to host this one-of-a-kind event that will celebrate tradition and advancement within the field of rheumatology. Members of the community are invited to attend this fundraising gala for an evening of celebration, kosher dinner, and dancing.

Live entertainment will feature the highly anticipated Bobby Cairns Quintet. Bobby Cairns has been busy teaching, performing and adjudicating music for over 45 years. Bobby’s custom jazz style and musical expertise have allowed him to work in a variety of settings from the writing and production of television themes, documentary films, and commercials to appearances with symphony orchestras in both pop and classical concerts. Bobby Cairns will be joined by Juno award-winning and award-nominated musicians to complete the quintet.

“I’m very pleased to be able to participate in The Joint Affair,” Bobby Cairns said, “I am certain everyone will enjoy the music and have a wonderful evening.”

The community is invited to attend or make a donation. Sponsorship and advertising opportunities are also available. Please visit www.thejointaffair.ca for more details and to purchase tickets.
