Anita is proud of the Urban Retreat and rightly so. After her early days working at a salon, she developed a home-based business in 2003. She ran it for several years while simultaneously starting a family. Both grew quickly and eventually Anita decided to take a chance and launch Urban Retreat Body & Skincare Centre in its current location at 6841 170 Street, in the heart of Wolf Willow Shopping Centre.
“It was a little bit scary taking that risk and it was a huge learning curve for me being an employer,” Anita says. “But it’s turned out to be really good. I have such an amazing staff of career-oriented ladies.”
Urban Retreat Body & Skincare Centre has gradually expanded its location, taking over more store space to meet the growing demand for their aesthetics services. Now the business offers six shiatsu massage pedicure chairs, space for a couple’s massage, a client lounge and a steam room. “Come in to relax before or after your treatment,” invites Anita.
All of the behind-the-scenes activity keeps Anita very busy. “I used to work a lot in the business,” she says. “But it’s nice that I have such an amazing staff that I can tell my clients to go see and they know they are going to receive the same great service.”

Over the years, Anita has noticed a huge growth in the number of male clients. “It used to be that guys would come in for a massage and the occasional waxing before a holiday,” she says. “These days, they are coming in more often for skin treatments, manicures and pedicures.” Anita explains that most men who visit her business are initially introduced by their wives or girlfriends the first time, and now some have started coming in more frequently than their partners.
