Jewish community pitches in with the Interfaith Housing Initiative to help end homelessness in Edmonton: August 10

The Edmonton Jewish Community is participating in the Capital City Interfaith Housing Initiative to help Habitat for Humanity build homes for Edmonton residents in need. August 10 is the day designated for the Jewish community to take the lead. Contact Rabbanit Batya Friedman for details.

Members of the Edmonton Jewish community are pitching in to help end homelessness in our City by participating in Habitat for Humanity’s 5th Annual Interfaith-Habitat Works project in conjunction with the Capital Region Interfaith Housing Initiative.

The project kicked off on July 7 and will continue until August 25 with 58 homes being built in Southeast Edmonton. On August 10, it’s the Jewish community’s turn.  Rabbanit Batya Friedman is taking a leadership role with this event as part of her position as the director of the Capital Region Interfaith Housing Initiative (CRIHI).

Habitat for Humanity explained the process for first time or returning volunteers. They said, “The shifts are from 8:30 – 4:15 at the Habitat for Humanity prefab shop. Beginners to tradespeople are welcome.  provide all tools and equipment, safety training and hands on training. Essentially we have a system of organizing the volunteers to work in small groups with lead people in the group. The minimum age is 16 and a youth under 18 has to work alongside their parent. Volunteers at the shop are building walls that will be put up on our build sites. Right now we are building walls for a huge upcoming build in southeast Edmonton called Laurel. There will be 58 homes there.”

Rabbanit Batya added, “The Interfaith Works Project is an opportunity for our community to help build homes for hard-working families who would not be able to purchase a home through a traditional mortgage. We will also be providing lunch for the volunteers and workers.”

If anyone is interested in volunteering with the building of homes for Habitat for Humanity contact Rabbanit Batya at batya@interfaithhousing.ca or sign up at hfh.org.
