By Kelly McCauley, Member of Parliament, Edmonton-West
(Edmonton) – I’m voting for a strong Alberta within a united Canada which is why I’m voting Option 1 for Alberta to stay in Canada
I am a proud Albertan and a proud Canadian. Those two identities have never been in conflict for me. As a Member of Parliament for Edmonton West, I have the privilege of representing Albertans in Ottawa, and that experience has reinforced my belief that Alberta’s future is best served within a strong and united Canada.
My decision to vote for Alberta to remain in Canada is ultimately about what I believe is in the best interests of the people I represent.
That does not mean accepting the status quo. Alberta has legitimate grievances with Ottawa. I have seen first-hand the frustration over federal policies affecting our energy sector, taxation, regulation, and economic opportunities. I believe strongly that Alberta should have a greater voice in decisions that affect our province.
But I also believe there is a difference between demanding a better deal within Confederation and leaving Confederation altogether.
As an MP, I have seen the importance of having Alberta voices at the federal table. Our province has an enormous contribution to make to Canada: our natural resources, entrepreneurs, workers, agriculture, energy expertise and growing communities all strengthen the country.
I also believe Canada benefits enormously from Alberta. A successful Alberta means more jobs, investment, vital resources for our valued social programs and opportunities for Canadians across the country.
Voting to remain in Canada does not mean giving Ottawa a blank cheque. Quite the opposite. I believe Alberta should remain steadfast at the table while continuing to fight for a fairer federation—one where provincial jurisdiction is respected and Alberta’s economic potential unleashed.
There is plenty of work ahead. We need to build the infrastructure that gets our resources to market, reduce unnecessary red tape, encourage investment and make sure Alberta has the opportunity to compete and prosper.
My commitment is to continue making that case in Ottawa.
I am voting for Alberta to remain in Canada because I believe we can have both: a strong, confident Alberta and a stronger, united Canada.
On October 19, I am voting option 1.
