Beth Shalom (Edmonton) is seeking a Director of Membership Engagement

Preamble: The Director of Community Engagement will report to the Board of Directors, and work closely with other synagogue staff, including the Rabbi and office staff, in carrying out his/her responsibilities to ensure the synagogue’s consistent achievement of its objectives. With an emphasis on work in communication and programming, the objective of this position is to help foster a membership community that feels more connected to Beth Shalom.

The Director of Programming & Communication will perform the following duties and ensure that they are being performed in the most efficient and cost effective manner. The role has strong components in Administration, Coordination and Public Relations.

Communication: – Participate in weekly staff meetings with the Office Manager, Rabbi and Custodian

– Design, modernize, implement and manage all Beth Shalom communications, which currently include, but are not limited to, monthly bulletins, weekly flyers, program posters, email communications, website and social media.

– Work with the Office manager to ensure the congregation management database and ShulCloud, is up to date, and is leveraged to meet communication objectives, including optimization of electronic communication.

– Advise on and implement communication best practises, particularly with the Rabbi. – Publicize all events and programming at Beth Shalom.

– Establish and leverage relationships with other Jewish and general community organizations.

– Serve as a point of contact for potential new members and ensure the synagogue office is perceived as congregant friendly. Work with the Rabbi to develop a new welcome program for new members.

– When deficits of communication content are noted (e.g. written policy deficits), to inform the board of directors the need for future policy development.

Programming: – Collaborate and work with the Beth Shalom Programming Committee & other committees as identified.

– Plan and execute strategy to increase participation in scheduled programming ran by the Rabbi or the synagogue.

– Design and implement exciting and appropriate programming throughout the year for the various demographic bases at Beth Shalom (Examples: Youth, Adult, Social, Education based, Social Action, etc). This includes working with the Rabbi to develop Ritual and judaic based programming.

– Ensure programs remain within or under budget and communicate to the office manager to coordinate the budget.

– Develop a program workflow that addresses planning, setup, logistics, finances and communication. This workflow should include communication with both the Rabbi and Office manager.

– Attend all Synagogue programming to help in logistical, content and support.

– Report to the board, Office Manager and Rabbi on a monthly basis on the status of the synagogues programming including attendance, successes/failures and budgeting.

– Assist when required with programming related to synagogue fundraising.

– Encourage and develop a group of synagogue lay leaders in the area of programming.

– Help to foster a warm and inviting environment for current and potential members of Beth Shalom.

Support: – Work with the Office Manager during High Holidays and Fundraising Galas to support as needed.

 Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have related post-secondary education or training, and/or several years of relevant experience. Familiarity within a similar organization would be an asset, although not required.

The following attributes are suggested to be successful in this role:

– Good understanding of, or ability to learn, Jewish rituals, traditions, religious observance and holidays. – Proven management skills

– Demonstrates the ability to make decisions quickly and appropriately on a wide variety of issues and tasks related to the congregational community and the functioning of the synagogue.

– Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate effectively both written and orally.

– Diplomatic, gracious, cheerful and stable disposition in working with congregants, colleagues, professional staff, lay leadership. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with people in the community and the general public.

– Ability to keep the big picture in mind while still paying attention to all the details of the daily operation of the synagogue.

– Appropriate computer skills.

– Acknowledgment that this is not a “9-5” job; that tasks related to this job may require hours worked evenings or weekends at times.

The successful applicant will be granted a 1-year initial contract with anticipation of renewal with proficient performance.

Salary: Salary will be commensurate to experience and education.
