(Edmonton) – We have just wound up the Heritage Festival, and summer is passing in a flash. Although the weather abruptly ended the festival, we had a strong Israel pavilion, and volunteers stepped up to assist with tearing down on short notice. The next day, multiple newcomers showed up at our office, seeking the community and looking to connect.

As we prepare to commemorate Tisha B’av, we are reminded that although our people are dispersed, they still maintain a special connection. This link spans geography and time; the Federation’s story is one chapter in a long thread of Jewish continuity.

I am proud that the Jewish Federation plays an active part in strengthening Jewish identity through bursaries to Camp BB Riback, Talmud Torah School, BBYO,” and JCC Maccabi Games. We staff and fund Hillel on campus. MacEwan students will see this support as we are expanding our services by creating a chapter for them. We work with agencies to help welcome newcomers. PJ Library and Shalom Baby programming and monthly book subscriptions connect families. We have established a JCC redevelopment committee that is diligently working to establish this new community hub.

As one, we can ensure that Jewish life in Edmonton flourishes and thrives. Please sign up for our United Jewish Appeal (UJA) launch with a special guest from Israel, Sarah Mali, director general of the Jewish Federations of Canada – United Israel Appeal and the incredible vocals of Shaina Silver-Baird. I hope you are receiving our weekly newsletter, The Bridge, so that you can keep up to date on all our programs and events. Sign up at jewishedmoton.org.

While the fall of the second temple reminds us of our dispersion, we in the diaspora maintain a deep connection with Israel. As we prepare for the UJA campaign, we look forward to hosting guests who can connect you to the hope and resilience that are characteristic of our Israeli brethren, speakers who can help make sense of the geopolitical situation, and events that should convene and unite us.

Am Yisrael Chai.
