(Calgary) – Early Sunday morning on July 28, as I was preparing for the Walk With Israel, my phone rang with unsettling news. A chain had been put up across the pedestrian overpass at the beginning of our walk route, and pro-Palestinian graffiti was sprayed all around the area. Calgary Police Service was already on the scene. I felt sick but not surprised – the location and route of the Walk had been shared publicly. Despite this act of intimidation, there were no protesters present.
However, this did not deter the over 1,000 participants who showed up. In fact, before we even started, someone covered up the graffiti with blue and white paint. A Good Samaritan drove up, took cans of paint out of his car, and began brushing over the remaining spraypaint. Instead of walkers seeing “Zionists Not Welcome,” someone hung an Israeli flag over the word “Not.”
Our collective spirit and dedication were on full display as we walked together in support of Israel, strengthening our bonds and reaffirming our commitment to our shared values. As I walked, I stopped to speak with some of the allies who had joined us.
I said, “Thank you,” and they answered, “We are with you!” Residents in the neighborhood we walked through came out to wave and cheer us on, and cars driving by honked in support. The palpable energy was truly inspiring. The enthusiasm and support made this event a memorable and impactful one.
As we celebrate the success of the Walk With Israel, I am reminded of how vital our UJA Campaign is in continuing the momentum of support for our community. The annual Campaign is the backbone of our efforts to ensure essential services and programs are available not just within our local community but also nationally and internationally. Moreover, as more Israeli families are choosing Calgary as their new home, it is our shared duty to not just welcome them but to ensure they are fully embraced and supported, empowering them to thrive as integral members of our community.
Whether it’s a warm welcome at the Paperny Family JCC, resettlement services assistance from JFSC, or financial aid through the Integrated Bursary Program (IBP) to allow their children to attend Halpern Akiva Academy or The Calgary Jewish Academy, each agency plays a critical role. There is no single agency that stands above the rest; all are crucial in weaving the fabric of our community. Your involvement and generosity in the UJA Campaign will enable us to continue addressing the pressing needs of these families and others in our community, ensuring that Calgary remains a vibrant and inclusive home for all.
I encourage everyone to participate in the UJA Campaign and make a difference. With You We Can ensure that our community remains strong, vibrant, and supportive of all its members.
Save the date for our Campaign launch: “Finding Your Voice,” on Sunday, September 8, featuring three prominent Jewish advocates and educators: Amy Albertson, Debbie Lechtman (Roots Metal), and Matthew Nouriel. Register online at jewishcalgary.org.
Thank you for your unwavering support and commitment. Let’s continue to walk together, united in our purpose and driven by our shared mission.
