(Calgary) – On Wednesday, September 16, Halpern Akiva Academy marked Terry Fox Day — a day dedicated to learning about Terry Fox’s inspiring story, remembering his legacy, and raising awareness about the importance of cancer research.
The day began with a special school-wide assembly in the gym, where students learned about who Terry Fox was, his life, and the mission he set for himself: Raising funds for cancer research by running across Canada.
Following the assembly, the younger students returned to their classrooms to take part in age-appropriate activities that allowed them to explore Terry’s story in a meaningful and engaging way.
The older students participated in a special 30-minute long session with a Terry Fox Foundation Ambassador. They learned more about Terry’s life and his battle with cancer, the incredible amount of money he raised, and the support he received from communities across Canada throughout his journey.
One of the highlights of the day came after morning recess, when students from across the school went outside to run together around the field. As they ran, they reflected on the incredible challenge Terry Fox took on — running an average of approximately 42 kilometres every day! The experience gave students an opportunity to think about the determination, perseverance and strength of spirit that Terry demonstrated throughout his journey.
Terry Fox Day at Halpern Akiva Academy was an opportunity for students not only to learn about an important figure in Canadian history, but also to connect with values of courage, generosity, perseverance and community.
