First year reflections from Halpern Akiva Academy Principal Jenna Pappas

(Calgary) – As we conclude the 2025–2026 school year, I find myself reflecting on what an incredible first few months it has been as the new Principal at Halpern Akiva Academy.

Stepping in to lead a Jewish day school has come with a significant learning curve. While I have spent more than 20 years working in bilingual schools around the world and feel very much at home in multilingual learning environments, I have greatly appreciated the opportunity to deepen my understanding of Jewish education, traditions, and culture. Over the past few months, our students have often been my teachers, sharing their knowledge, traditions, Hebrew language, and enthusiasm for Jewish learning.

This school year for our students has been filled with learning, growth, celebration, and community. One of the things that has impressed me most is how naturally our students move between Hebrew and English learning environments while developing strong academic skills and a deep connection to their Jewish identity. Whether in the classroom, on field trips, through holiday celebrations, or in daily interactions with one another, our students have demonstrated curiosity, kindness, and resilience.

As we look ahead to September 2026, we are excited to begin implementing an inquiry framework in Kindergarten through Grade 2. This initiative reflects our commitment to creating meaningful learning experiences grounded in Judaic values and Hebrew language. In the 2027–2028 school year, we will expand the framework into Grades 3–5.

Implementing an inquiry framework within a bilingual school presents unique opportunities and challenges. In bilingual education, every minute of the school day counts. Students are learning in two languages while engaging in a rich academic program, requiring a rigorous and intentional approach to teaching and learning. Through inquiry we ensure that learning is purposeful, internationally minded, and firmly grounded in Judaic values. By creating meaningful connections across disciplines, students will deepen their understanding of the world around them while strengthening their Jewish identity and maintaining excellence in both General and Judaic education.

As a school, we remain committed to welcoming Jewish families from across Calgary and providing excellence in General, Hebrew, and Judaic education while instilling a love of Torah. We are excited about the future and look forward to building on the many successes of the history of Halpern Akiva Academy.
