A message from Rob Nagus: Standing in solidarity with Israel

Dear Community Members,

Calgary Jewish Federation stands shoulder to shoulder with Israel and the Jewish people during this decisive moment in our history.

Last week, Israel acted decisively against a growing, existential threat  — not only to its own future, but to the future of Jews everywhere.

Iran’s regime has made no secret of its dangerous ambitions. For years, it has openly called for the destruction of Israel and has persistently pursued the ability to carry it out. The Iranian nuclear program has never been peaceful; it is a clear and present danger — a violation of international obligations and a direct threat to our people’s survival. Repeated reports by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have confirmed that Iran is pursuing military nuclear capabilities in direct violation of its international commitments. Just this week, following a resolution by the IAEA finding Iran in breach of its treaty obligations, the regime announced its intention to further expand and upgrade its uranium enrichment.

Israel has made the difficult decision to take action. Like any sovereign nation, Israel has the right — and the obligation — to protect its citizens from existential threats. We stand with Israel in its efforts to safeguard its future and uphold the security of the Jewish people.

In the face of this aggression, Israel has 
demonstrated its resolve, unity, and ability to conquer seemingly overwhelming odds. The Jewish people have a rich legacy of perseverance — we have faced persecution, wars, and upheavals — yet we have always stood strong, proud, and unyielding in the face of danger. Israel’s decisive action underscores its ability to safeguard its future and the future of Jews around the world.

And as we watch this moment unfold, we do so with immense confidence in Israel’s ability to navigate whatever lies ahead. The Jewish people are not powerless; we are strong, we are united, and we are here to stay.

We know that what happens globally may 
reverberate here at home — particularly when dangerous myths, like the blood libel narrative, resurface in an attempt to intimidate and undermine us. That’s why we have already been in close contact with our national and local security partners, including the Calgary Police Service, and we will remain vigilant, protective, and united in the face of any threat. We ask all members of our community to do the same — staying informed, staying strong and looking out for one another.

Together — proud, strong, and unbreakable — we will face whatever comes. We will continue to stand united for Israel, for our community and for the future of the Jewish people.
