(AJNews) – The 2023-2024 school year at the Calgary Jewish Academy was truly unforgettable, marked by a profound sense of community and countless valuable lessons. From festive celebrations to building awareness of our community, the year was a testament to the power of coming together.
Our holiday celebrations were a cornerstone of this memorable year. Weekly Shabbat gatherings, the annual Latke Lunch, a school-wide Passover Seder, and the Lag B’Omer bonfire were just a few highlights. These events brought joy and a sense of belonging, and also reinforced the importance of shared traditions. Celebrating as a community strengthens bonds, fosters mutual support, and creates a nurturing environment where everyone feels valued.
In addition to gatherings, our community took significant strides in raising awareness and funds for various causes. Our efforts for UJA, Magen David Adom, The Terry Fox Foundation, and others highlighted the principles of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) and Tzedakah (charitable giving). These activities taught our students the importance of giving back and the impact of collective efforts in making a difference.
The school year was also enriched by meaningful learning opportunities. Our athletics program, along with travel experiences, broadened students’ horizons. Trips to New York City to explore Jewish life, Washington DC to learn about the Holocaust and Human Rights, Drumheller to study prehistoric life, Edmonton to understand provincial government, and Kamp Kiwanis for outdoor education provided immersive and hands-on learning experiences. Collaborations with the Calgary Jewish Federation and the Jewish National Fund allowed students to connect with people in Israel, fostering a sense of global community and empathy, especially during this time of need.
Hands-on learning extended beyond the classroom. Students built relationships with our neighbours at Chinook Intercare and Trinity Lodge, explored wetlands by the Calgary Reservoir, and engaged in geocaching adventures. These activities nurtured curiosity, teamwork, and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
All these experiences are just a glimpse of the dynamic and enriching environment at the Calgary Jewish Academy. Our commitment to providing students with meaningful learning opportunities ensures they grow not only academically but also as compassionate and responsible members of the community. The 2023-2024 school year has been a vivid reminder of the incredible power of community and the lessons it imparts. We hope everyone has a great summer and we look forward to seeing all of our students’ smiling faces again in the fall.
