(AJNews) – Being part of a Jewish community means warmth, joy and connection, but this comes along with a need for vigilance and responsibility.  In comparison to some parts of the globe, Edmonton enjoys a measure of security, most of the time, thanks – in part – to the tireless efforts and local cooperation between the community and law enforcement.

On Friday, May 15, an unmarked package was discovered in front of Beth Israel Synagogue’s entrance.  “Out of an abundance of caution, Edmonton Police Service (EPS) was contacted,” commented Stacy Leavitt-Wright CEO of the Jewish Federation of Edmonton in a statement sent out to the local community.  “We are grateful for their swift response and for taking the matter seriously. Police cordoned off the surrounding area and deployed the bomb squad to investigate,” she concluded.  Although motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic was at a standstill while law enforcement officials thoroughly examined the scene, their meticulous efforts did determine that the object in question was not a threat, and all Edmontonians, Jews and non-Jews, are appreciative of their steadfastness and professionalism.

“The safety and security of our community remain our highest priority. We remind everyone to remain vigilant and to report anything unusual or concerning to local authorities,” echoed Philip Kirman, President of Beth Israel’s Board of Directors in a statement issued before Shabbat.  “At this time, we are continuing to work closely with EPS and will share any additional updates if needed.”  Thankfully, Shabbat services were able to proceed as usual, and arriving at shul Saturday morning felt no different, and by the time that the congregation’s children took to the bimah in song, there was a sizeable turnout.

“If anyone wants to drop off a package at any of the Edmonton Jewish institutions, please call them ahead of time. We appreciate your calm, cooperation, and commitment to looking out for one another,” expressed Leavitt-Wright.  By being mindful and vigilant the Jewish community of Edmonton continues to safeguard its members, and EPS has been an active part of this ongoing imperative.

It is regrettable that circumstances around the world have necessitated such heightened awareness, but through the quick action of EPS and the diligence of the Federation, Edmontonians can take solace knowing that they are not alone.  If anyone should encounter anything suspicious that concerns them, they are asked to alert local law enforcement and contact the Jewish Federation of Edmonton.
