EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TALMUD TORAH SCHOOL

Talmud Torah School is the leader in Jewish and secular education in Edmonton through our offering of a rigorous and comprehensive academic program of general and Judaic studies. It is a public school with a student body that encompasses all walks of Judaism and a faculty which encompasses the broad Canadian mosaic. Our school places a priority on developing critical, independent and creative thought and expression; a strong command of the Hebrew language; as well as an appreciation of the history, wisdom, spiritual depth and ethical guidance of Judaism. SUMMARY

Looking for an innovative, outgoing and independent Executive Director with a love for Judaism, who will work closely with students, the Board of Directors, school administrators, and the local Jewish community to create a vibrant and engaged Jewish Day School. Must be an excellent communicator with experience building and maintaining relationships with students, alumni, and other key stakeholders.

The Executive Director will lead all financial, human resources, facility, technology and administrative operations for the Talmud Torah Society. The Executive Director will directly manage and supervise a small administrative team.

Gifts to the Talmud Torah Society have made our growth possible, and an ever broadening and deeper philanthropic program will be necessary for us to sustain and grow our School in the years ahead. We seek an Executive Director who will passionately and effectively tell the story of why the Talmud Torah Society matters and why it should be the beneficiary of support from our broadly defined collection of stakeholders. This is a full time position requiring some evening and weekend hours.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Board Governance:

• Works with board in order to fulfill organization mission.

• Responsible for leading Talmud Torah Society in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission as defined by the Board of Directors.

• Responsible for communicating effectively with the Board and providing, in a timely and accurate manner, all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions. Financial Performance and Viability:

• Develops resources sufficient to ensure the financial health of the organization.

• Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will manage all financial operations, including accounting and financial reporting, billing, collections, purchasing, expense control, cash management and analysis, contract negotiations, budgeting and investments.

• With the support of a bookkeeper, maintain banking relationships and coordinate with outside accountants for tax and audit preparation. Work with outside legal counsel and insurance experts for employment, liability and real estate issues.

• Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.

Organization Mission and Strategy:

• Works with the board and staff to ensure that the mission is fulfilled through programs, strategic planning and community outreach.

• Responsible for implementation of Talmud Torah Society’s programs that carry out the organization’s mission. • Responsible for strategic planning to ensure that Talmud Torah Society can successfully fulfill its Mission into the future.

• Visionary leadership that can articulate the mission of the Talmud Torah Society.

• Executive Director will work with the school principal to ensure excellence in academic quality across the curriculum with special attention to Judaic studies.

• Envision and coordinate a recruitment and retention plan to grow the enrollment. In addition, the ED will need to create a facility and funding plan to accommodate the growing needs of the School. Organization Operations:

• Oversees and implements appropriate resources to ensure that the operations of the organization are appropriate.

• Responsible, effective administration of Talmud Torah Society operations.

• Responsible for the hiring and retention of competent, qualified staff (excluding Edmonton Public School Board staff).

• In conjunction with school principal, ensure the safety, security, and cleanliness of the school at all times.

• Oversight of recruitment, interviewing and communication with prospective families.

• Develop and initiate innovative and informative Judaic, academic and recreational programming. Community Relations and Engagement:

• Liaise with various community organizations including synagogues, youth groups and other stakeholders.

• Support and facilitate school participation in community wide festivals and events.

• Responsible for the enhancement of Talmud Torah Society’s image by being active and visible in the community and by working closely with other professional, civic and private organizations Alumni Outreach and Fundraising:

• Significantly grow revenue through individuals, foundations, alumni and corporations.

• Foster relationships with current and potential donors and pursue additional fundraising partnerships and provide strategies to the Board for expanding fundraising efforts and increasing outgoing grant proposals.

EXPERIENCE, QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

• Proven leadership of a non-profit organization

• Strong People management skills

• Outstanding Administrative and organizational skills

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and interpersonal skills • Experience in coordinating, facilitating, and implementing programs

• Knowledge and understanding of Jewish tradition and practice as well as a familiarity and comfort with Judaism and all its branches

• Undergraduate Degree

• Criminal Record Check

• Degree Jewish Education and/or experience in the Jewish Education Field is an asset

• Experience in Jewish Supplementary, Informal, Organizational or Day School is an asset

• Hebrew as a first or second language is an asset
