Israel under attack: A message from Calgary Jewish Federation

by Lisa Libin and Adam Silver

(Calgary) – While we would not typically send messages on Shabbat and Chagim (Shemini Atzeret / Simchat Torah), given the current situation evolving in Israel, we feel the urgency of this message warrants immediate distribution.

We awoke this morning with heavy hearts after learning of the grave situation in Israel and the horrific ongoing attacks by Hamas and their partners. Innocent Israeli families have been kidnapped. Hundreds are reported injured and deaths are currently in the double digits and rising. This is not like other attacks. Israel is now at war.

We stand with Israel always, and especially now. We pray for the safety of Israel’s citizens as well as the brave military forces working to protect our people and our country.

We are in regular communication and collaboration with our agency partners and are committed to utilizing all available resources to support Israel during this devastating time. We will continue to update our community on the situation as it unfolds. We have also been in regular contact with local law enforcement. While there are no identified threats, CPS has committed to increasing patrols to our local institutions, especially our synagogues and the Paperny Family JCC over the weekend/chagim, where our community is gathering for Shabbat and Yom Tov services, and celebrations.

If you are in synagogue today and tomorrow, please be sure to say the Prayer for the State of Israel, and keep our friends and family there in your thoughts. Am Israel Chai.
