(Calgary) – This week, Calgary lost a notable member of our community. Fania (Fanny) Wedro was a devoted citizen of the world. She gave much of her time to the Calgary Jewish community and to humanitarian projects in Israel, including supporting our local inclusion programming for those with special needs. She was dedicated to making certain that the Holocaust and its lessons would never be forgotten.
Over the years, she shared her Shoah testimony with thousands of students, and spoke at numerous conferences. Fanny was a tireless philanthropist and volunteer. She endowed Holocaust memorials in Poland and the Ukraine and supported the “Holocaust by Bullets” research that uncovered previously unfound mass graves.
Her lifetime of work was recognized by the University of Calgary in May 2023, when she was bestowed with an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
She was the beloved founding member of the Calgary Chapter of Magen David Adom and was a generous philanthropist in many Jewish organizations.
The Calgary Jewish Community will miss her commitment to community and her enthusiastic personality. May her memory be for a blessing. Baruch Dayan Ha’emet.
