(AJNews) – It’s hard to believe that the H.A. and I.R. Friedman Scholarship has been managed by the Talmud Torah Society for 40 years. This fund was expressly set up to assist youth from Edmonton to go to Israel to learn Hebrew and/or participate in educational programs.
The Talmud Torah Society board has been administering the fund in accordance with the terms of the agreement since October 1984. Over the years, over one hundred recipients have participated in Zionist programs in Israel with the support of the Friedman Scholarship.
Applicants are to be from the Edmonton Jewish community and between 15 and 25 years of age. Upon their return from Israel, recipients are asked to write an article (approx. 500-800 words) summarizing their experience in Israel and its impact, which is published in our Talmud Torah Times newsletter, as well as Alberta Jewish News (AJN).
Priority is given to applicants who are graduates of Talmud Torah School, and throughout the years many TT alumni have received a Friedman scholarship. Most recently, TT alumni Leah Campbell (Class of 2017) and Rena Uretsky (Class of 2018) attended March of the Living (MOL), while Noam Rosenblum (Class of 2017) participated in Birthright.
In the October edition of AJN, you can learn about Leah Campbell’s MOL experience. Keep an eye out for upcoming editions of Alberta Jewish News for Noam and Rena’s articles.
The Friedman Scholarship is open for applications year-round. Anyone interested in applying can reach out to Natalie Soroka at the Society office at 780-481-3377 or nataliesoroka@talmudtorahsociety.com
