(AJNews) – This December, the halls of The Calgary Jewish Academy (CJA) were alive with joy, laughter, and the warm glow of Hanukkah. The festival of lights brought with it a time to reflect on miracles, celebrate community, and share in the beauty of tradition. Throughout the month, students, staff, and families embraced the true spirit of Hanukkah with activities and events that united all in joy and celebration.
At the centre of this year’s festivities was Mordechai, our beloved Mensch on a Bench. From the very first day of December, Mordechai entertained students with his playful antics, bringing laughter and excitement to the entire school. Every morning, students eagerly searched for Mordechai, who appeared in unexpected places, often teaching valuable lessons about the meaning of Hanukkah. Through his mischievous charm, Mordechai reminded everyone of the importance of light, miracles, and community.
The youngest students at CJA got hands-on with Hanukkah traditions in delightful ways. Nursery students channeled their creativity in the kitchen, baking Hanukkah-themed cookies that added a sweet touch to the celebrations. Meanwhile, Junior Kindergarten students took on the exciting task of designing and creating their own chanukiyot, exploring the significance of the Hanukkah lights. These moments were filled with wonder, as the children connected with their heritage while crafting something meaningful and beautiful.
Of course, no Hanukkah season at the CJA would be complete without the most anticipated event of the year—the annual Latke Lunch. This beloved tradition was led by the grade one students, who filled the gym with Hanukkah songs and lively dances. Over 300 guests, including students, parents, community members, and special delegates, gathered to enjoy the celebration. Parent volunteers worked tirelessly to prepare over 1,400 latkes, ensuring there was plenty of the delicious treat for everyone. Guests were also serenaded by the Macabell Ringers, CJA’s handbell club, whose festive music added a touch of magic to the day.
The Early Years Hanukkah concert was another highlight, as the youngest students lit up the stage with their heartfelt performances. Their songs and dances embodied the joy and wonder of the holiday, leaving parents, Babas, Zaidas and audience members beaming with pride. These moments were a beautiful reminder of the importance of teaching the next generation about their traditions and the enduring spirit of Hanukkah.
As the week drew to a close, CJA staff and students shared one last celebration together, enjoying sufganiyot, the traditional Hanukkah jelly doughnuts, and a school-wide Hanukkah Bingo. The games brought laughter and friendly competition, while the sweet treats reminded everyone of the sweetness of community and the miracles of the season.
Throughout the month, the spirit of Hanukkah shone brightly at CJA. From the flickering candles of the menorah to the joyful laughter of children, the holiday was a time to reflect on the miracles of the past and the light we bring into the world today. The Calgary Jewish Academy is incredibly lucky to have such a vibrant, supportive community to celebrate with during this special season.
As the menorah lights remind us, even the smallest flame can drive away the deepest darkness, symbolizing hope, resilience, and the power of unity. At The Calgary Jewish Academy, this message resonated deeply as we came together to celebrate the miracles of the past and create a brighter future for our community.
