(AJNews) – Earlier this year, HeAtBaGs legend Barry Slawsky announced that after 39 years he was retiring from the Edmonton Jewish Hockey League. After a lot of kibbitzing and a wonderful luncheon, the team honoured Slawsky with a retirement banner which will remain hung in the rafters of Argyll Arena, where the league plays each Sunday.

In a prepared speech to his teammates and their families, Slawsky joked as though he wasn’t quite sure what they had all gathered to celebrate. But true to form, he let them know how much he had enjoyed playing hockey with the league and particularly as part of the HeAtBaGs team. Slawsky brought some props to the lunch event so he could reminisce about the various teams that he had both sponsored and played for – including some vintage San Fransisco jerseys.

Later that evening Barry was presented with the banner which was emblazoned with the HeAtBaGs logo and the name Slawsky. He had the honour of dropping the puck to start the game and the rest is history.

Barry has been a long time philanthropist within the Edmonton Jewish Community spearheading several fundraising projects – most notably the Edmonton Talmud Torah School. He is also the founding publisher of Edmonton Jewish News.

Yasher Koach to Barry and his family!

The HeAtBaGs joined Slawsky for an amazing family lunch to wish him well in his retirement, after 39 seasons with the EJHL.
