(Edmonton) – We are approaching the holiday of Purim, a time of celebration, reflection, and unity, commemorating the bravery of Queen Esther and the triumph of good over evil. It is a reminder of the strength and resilience that has always been a hallmark of the Jewish people.

The courage of Queen Esther, who risked her life to save her people, is a timeless example of bravery. In Edmonton, we are seeing fortitude and courage among our youth, who face antisemitism in school, on social media, and on campus. It is crucial that we help them navigate challenges and stand proud of their heritage. With community partners, we continue to empower them with education and a strong sense of identity.

On March 12, Hillel will welcome author Ben Freeman, whose talk about Jewish Indigeneity: resilience, identity, and combating antisemitism is based on the latest book in his trilogy. A grant from the Government of Alberta to combat antisemitism, cultivate resilience in our Jewish residents, and foster empathy among Alberta’s diverse population supported this event. We have invited Indigenous representatives who will take part in the evening. Registrants under the age of 22 will receive a copy of his new book.

Through the United Jewish Appeal campaign, we consistently support our teens and young adults, strengthening their Jewish identity through annual funding to BBYO and Camp BB Riback. I look forward to providing physical safe spaces in the new Jewish Community Centre and running into teens as they come after school to hang out in their lounge.

We are thrilled to announce that “Be The Narrative: Student to Student” has chosen us as a community. Student to Student® is an educational outreach program that helps increase the understanding of Judaism and reduce stereotypes among high school students. It empowers diverse Jewish teens to work together and share personal experiences with non-Jewish peers to expand knowledge and dispel stereotypes. We will roll this out into the fall.

Let us all take a moment of Jewish joy and pride this Purim, whether you are taking part in the Megillah’s reading, sharing mishloach manot with friends and family, or giving to those in need through matanot la’evyonim, may this festival bring you happiness and a sense of community. Together, we are creating a thriving caring, engaged and connected Jewish community.
