Calgary Jewish Federation Interim Executive Director, Diana Kalef

(Calgary) – As the High Holidays come to a close, our hearts are filled with a renewed sense of purpose and reflection. We gathered to celebrate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, embraced the beauty of the sukkah, and shared the joy of Torah on Simchat Torah. This year, however, Simchat Torah carried a profound poignancy. We celebrated with the somber memory of the attacks on our Israeli family a year ago—lives lost and many still heartbreakingly held captive, far from home. This reality tempered our joy and underscored the preciousness of community and the ongoing need for unity and resilience.

Just recently, we also commemorated Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass, a painful reminder of how swiftly Jewish lives can be disrupted. Moments like these emphasize the importance of standing together and safeguarding our future.

Now that the chagim are behind us, Calgary Jewish Federation has returned to its regularly scheduled programming, bringing energy and connection to every corner of Jewish Calgary. Our PJ Library programs are thriving, with families eagerly gathering to foster Jewish learning and values in a warm, inclusive environment. Meanwhile, JAC is reinvigorating its offerings, with young adults joining together for events that celebrate Jewish culture, build friendships, and strengthen ties to Jewish Calgary. Across the board, our calendar is filled with diverse events and initiatives, each one bringing people of all ages together to engage and learn. Jewish Calgary is truly bustling, with vibrant opportunities for everyone to connect and grow.

The UJA campaign is integral in supporting our community. The annual campaign brings us together—educational and cultural initiatives, essential services, and welcoming new families to Calgary, including those arriving from Israel. Through Jewish Calgary, we strive to ensure they have the support they need to thrive while we embrace them with warmth and stability—especially vital in challenging times.

In the face of rising global antisemitism, we must remain steadfast, united against hate. By pooling our resources and resolve, we strengthen our identity and ensure that future generations inherit a safe, supportive, and vibrant Jewish community. Supporting the campaign gives us the resources to push back against those forces that seek to divide us and to protect the values we hold dear.

As we move forward, let us channel the spirit of renewal and resilience into the work ahead. Every contribution to the UJA campaign, no matter the size, strengthens our foundation and builds a lasting legacy. With You We Can ensure a thriving, secure future for our children and grandchildren. I invite you to join me in transforming our values into lasting impact.

Thank you for your continued generosity, dedication, and the strength you bring to our shared vision. As we continue building our community, let us carry forward the unity and inspiration we have found together. With You We Can make a lasting difference.

B’Shalom.
