(Calgary) – On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27, Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas opened the City of Calgary’s Council meeting with heartfelt remarks to commemorate the day – to remember the Jewish victims of the Holocaust and honour the survivors.

Calgary Jewish Federation leadership met with Mayor Farkas as he signed a proclamation declaring January 27, 2026 International Holocaust Remembrance Day in Calgary.

CJF leaders stated on Facebook, “We discussed how we can continue working together to fight antisemitism and ensure Holocaust education remains a priority for our city. In the evening, we looked proudly to the sky as the Calgary Tower was lit to honour this important day.”

On January 29, Mayor Farkas delivered powerful supportive remarks at the Calgary Public Library as Calgary Jewish Federation’s Holocaust and Human Rights: Remembrance and Education department and CPL presented a moving screening and live performance of the score of “Le Chemin des Juifs: A Survivor’s Journey.”

The extraordinary film shares the story of a forgotten road in northern France. The footprints of Belgian Jews — forced into labour between 1942 and 1944 — stand as a silent testament to suffering, resilience, and one survivor’s extraordinary journey from captivity to peace. The screening was followed by a Q&A with director Daniel Bhattacharya and moderated by Rabbi Ilana Krygier Lapides.
