Update to the community regarding circulating email threat – there is no indication of imminent danger

(AJNews) – Both Calgary Jewish Federation and the Jewish Federation of Edmonton are aware of a threatening email that has been sent to Jewish organizations across the country, including institutions in both Calgary and Edmonton.

Calgary Jewish Federation issued the following statement: “Calgary Jewish Federation has been in touch with both RCMP and Calgary Police Service and there is no indication of any imminent danger to our community. We thank our local authorities for their swift responses and remind our community that if they see anything suspicious to please call police immediately.”

Jewish Federation of Edmonton issued the following statement, “We have been in touch with Edmonton Police Service and other police authorities. All indications point to these threats being nuisance emails designed to disrupt lives.

“Jewish Edmontonians and Canadians will not be intimidated, and we will continue to take part in our Jewish lives. The Federation is vigilant about our community’s security and safety.

“If you do encounter antisemitism, any type of related harassment or suspicious activity, please use our online reporting tool and call the police non-emergency line at 780-423-4567.”

Calgary Jewish Federation is committed to combating hate and antisemitism in all its forms. “As part of our dedication to fostering a safe and inclusive community, we’ve partnered with CIJA’s hate tool to swiftly address incidents of hatred and discrimination. By utilizing this tool, we ensure that both local and national authorities are notified promptly. To report a hate crime or antisemetic incident, please click here to access our reporting form. Together, let’s stand up against hate and intolerance.”

In response to the threats,  Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated on social media, “I’m disgusted at reports that more than 100 Jewish institutions across Canada were targeted by threats today. This is blatant antisemitism.”

CIJA spokesperson Julien Corona told CBC News that the email appears to have been sent to cause widespread fear in Canadian Jewish communities.

“They want to scare in a way that is quite emotional, quite visual.… By referencing disgusting things, the goal is to intimidate so that the Jewish community does not feel safe where it is supposed to feel safe,” Corona said in an interview with CBC.

“It’s unacceptable and it is also proof of the rising antisemitism in our country.”
