Philip Kirman: Small community, big heart, in the month of Kislev

(Edmonton) – One of the great blessings of being part of a community like ours is that nothing happens automatically—everything happens because someone cares. Every program, every Kiddush, every minyan, every moment of connection is the result of someone choosing to show up, to give, and to take responsibility for one another.

As we enter the month of Kislev, the month of light and hope, I’ve been reflecting on how our community embodies the very spirit of this season. The story of Chanukah is not only about miracles or military victories—it is about the small, steady acts of courage and dedication that keep Jewish life alive. Someone found a single jar of oil. Someone lit it. Someone believed that even a little light could push away a great deal of darkness.

In the same way, Beth Israel runs on the quiet, consistent contributions of so many individuals. Someone bakes. Someone organizes. Someone sets up chairs. Someone welcomes a newcomer at the door. These everyday acts—often unnoticed—are the modern “single jars of oil” that illuminate our shul and keep our community warm and strong.

On behalf of the Board, I want to express deep gratitude to each of you. You remind us that community is not measured by size, but by heart. And in Kislev especially, we are reminded that a small flame, when nurtured, can brighten an entire room.

As we move toward Chanukah—with more learning, davening, meals, and celebrations—may we continue to build on this spirit of kindness and dedication. May our acts of generosity, large and small, be sparks of light for each other and for the Jewish people.
