National New Democratic Party picks Jewish anti-Zionist Avi Lewis as its leader

By Shira Li Bartov (JTA)

The National New Democratic Party (NDP) aims to make a comeback under its new leader Avi Lewis, a Jewish anti-Zionist.

Lewis, a filmmaker and former journalist, was elected to lead the New Democrats on Sunday. He campaigned on principles that have energized the global left, including affordability, the environment and unapologetic anti-Zionism. He repeated his position on Israel in his acceptance speech in Winnipeg.

“When Israel commits a genocide in Gaza, we call it by its name, and we do everything in our power to bring it to an end,” Lewis said in his speech.

Lewis hopes to rebuild a party that suffered its worst losses in history during the 2025 federal election. Center-left voters who were alarmed by President Donald Trump’s threats to Canada flocked to the Liberal Party and elected Mark Carney as prime minister.

That Lewis opposes Zionism is no reflection on his Jewish identity. That identity he carries with him, whether he likes it or not. So, perhaps, no assumptions should be locked in place about necessary conditions for any such identity – unless these derive from some indisputable source. I don’t think they do.
What I find disappointing is the difficulty had by so many of trying to purge their talk of any ideological taint. Maybe it’s not really possible, but that needs philosophers, not journalists, to make the case. Plato tried – a long time ago.
Otherwise, in this case, it seems frankly irrelevant that the NDP’s current ethnic-Jewish leader happens to be anti-Zionist. That doesn’t seem to have been an obstacle to his impressive majority. Does anyone suppose his anti-Zionism can have been contrary to general NDP policy? Or has Avi won over his otherwise indifferent party members? If not, you may want to change your vote next time after the Brass touts its outlook.
What isn’t irrelevant is the very Lewis Dynasty which seems to have had a huge political following these many decades.
