A Hero.
When our father, Nikolai Golosarsky, came back from the battles of the World War II, he found out that his entire family perished in the Holocaust in Odessa, Ukraine. Only 3 percent of his 1922 year-born generation survived the war.
He married our mother, his high school sweetheart and was shortly accepted into Odessa Medical University. Dr. Nikolai Golosarsky became a successful ophthalmologist under the guidance of one of the most prominent Soviet ophthalmological schools. He literally saved the vision of thousands of patients.
Our father raised us well, never micromanaging or placing limits on our dreams and ambitions.
Both of his children also became physicians. He rarely spoke of the war or the sorrow and losses he endured. He liked French songs, played the piano occasionally, and had a deep love for animals of all kinds.
After our family immigrated to Canada, he volunteered at the Jewish Seniors Centre, where he gave health and wellness lectures. He continued to ride his bike until the age of 86.
He enjoyed beautiful and golden retirement years in Canada. Despite all he had been through, he maintained his sense of humor and humility until his passing at the age of 102.
Nikolai was a true-life hero. Never showy, never bragged with showcasing his achievements. His numerous medals have been passed down to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, serving as lasting reminders of his strength, courage, and legacy.
Thank you, father, grandfather, great grandfather.
