(Edmonton) – The CTeen International Shabbaton is tomorrow night. What began ten years ago with forty-teens has expanded to 2,500 this year. This year’s highlights include havdalah—a ceremony which separates the day of Shabbat from the working week—with Jewish rapper Nissim Black, and a grand banquet at Brooklyn’s Pier 12. Additionally, CTeen is also taking part in the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s Torah campaign; all participants will be encouraged to participate in having their own letter written in a Unity Torah, which will be completed in Israel.
“A few short years ago, the thought of Jewish pride on such a large scale was unheard of,” shared Rabbi Dovid Pinson, of ChaBaD of Edmonton. “By coming together in New York this weekend, we’re taking a stance at showing the world that Judaism and the Jewish nation are stronger than ever. Our chapter will be traveling with eleven local teens; they can’t wait to get there!”
The theme of the historic Shabbaton is Transcend the Tide. The theme aims to empower teens to overcome the challenges of Jewish Identity in public. It is a message that resonates hundreds of public school students who have made Judaism a priority through their involvement in CTeen. The network’s mission—to empower tomorrow’s next generation of leaders through Jewish education—rings true in this message.
“Our heritage to one to be proud. Being a part of CTeen has helped me feel empowered about my Jewish identity,” shared a teen leader from Edmonton. “I can’t wait to celebrate in New York with my CTeen family.”
“It’s equally humbling and thrilling to know that we’re going to be giving teens the unbelievable experience of the Shabbaton on this scale,” shared Rabbi Dovid Pinson, Director of CTeen of Edmonton. “The teens are going to see and experience Judaism in a way that is unparalleled to any other event in the world.”
CTeen creates a nurturing environment where giving to others encourages self-discovery. Teens develop awareness and confidence while connecting with individuals sharing similar experiences and beliefs, becoming an integral part of a group that focuses on building core values and stresses positive character development. CTeen is open to Jewish teens regardless of affiliation.
