Calgary Mayor Gondek withdraws from the Dec. 7 Menorah Lighting event

(Calgary) – It is with tremendous hurt and disappointment that we learned last night in a statement by Mayor Gondek, that she has withdrawn her attendance and participation in our annual candle lighting event at City Hall on Dec. 7 because it is in her words, “an event to support Israel.”

As always, and particularly at this time, our community does not waver in our support of Israel, nor will our community forget that 140 Israeli hostages still remain in captivity. Our yearning for peace in Israel and Gaza does not run counter to our support of Eretz Israel, but rather are inextricably linked.

We will issue a formal statement in response to the Mayor’s decision. In the meantime, we hope you will join us in record numbers on Dec. 7 to remind the Mayor and our Calgary community that we continue lighting candles in the midst of darkness – and we do so with strength and hope for a peaceful future.

Am Yisrael Chai – Chag Chanukah Sameach!

Best she shows her true colors. We don’t need gutless politicians hiding behind the rationale of building social harmony when “kill the Jews” is bellowing from many corners of society. Hanukka celebrates freedom from persecution of the Jews in Israel thousands of years ago. Can do without Jyoti Gondek’s pretentious self absorbed drama about her “heart wrenching” decision. Get over yourself Jyoti. You are not that important.
