A message from Beth Price and Diana Kalef, Calgary Jewish Federation

(AJNews) – As we welcome the year 5785, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment for reflection, renewal, and recommitment to the values that define us as a Jewish community. This past year has been one of unprecedented global challenges—especially in Israel—where uncertainty has forced many families to make the heart-wrenching decision to leave their homes in search of safety and security. These Israeli families, facing hardship, look to us for support as they begin new lives here in Calgary.

At the heart of our community’s response to these challenges is the UJA (United Jewish Appeal) Campaign. This Campaign is far more than a fundraising initiative—it is the lifeline that sustains our commitment to care for one another. It ensures that our Calgary Jewish community remains a welcoming and supportive home, especially for those who have newly arrived and are in need of assistance. Through our combined efforts, we demonstrate that no one is left behind, regardless of the trials they face.

One of the most impactful ways UJA supports our community is through the Integrated Bursary Program (IBP). This essential program opens doors to Jewish life for families struggling financially, ensuring access to vital resources such as Jewish day schools, summer camps, and community programs. These institutions are the backbone of Jewish identity and pride, fostering a sense of connection and belonging for all. For new families who have left not only their homeland behind—their entire support systems, in fact—IBP provides a critical pathway to stability and inclusion in our vibrant Jewish community.

The financial burden of education, camp, and community services can be overwhelming, especially for those starting over. Through IBP, UJA ensures that every family, regardless of their financial situation, has the chance to participate in these transformative experiences. This is not just about helping families meet their basic needs, it is about providing opportunities that build Jewish identity and strengthen the bonds that tie us together as a people.

A total of 112 students are currently receiving IBP support in our Jewish day schools, with more than 50 of them being new Israeli students in Jewish Calgary. This past summer, 71 campers attended Camp BB Riback and Camp JCC, bringing total support to over $550,000. This can only be achieved through generous donations to UJA. Beyond financial support, IBP conveys a powerful message of belonging and solidarity. It reassures each family that they are not alone—that we stand together as part of a larger Jewish community.

As we embark on the journey of this new year, it is important to recognize the critical role that UJA plays in securing the future of our community. Your contribution to this Campaign is not just a donation; it is an investment in people, families, and the continued vitality of Jewish life in Calgary. Together, through the power of our collective generosity, we ensure that everyone has a place in our community, and that our shared Jewish story continues to thrive for generations to come. With You We Can!

Let us move forward with renewed commitment and compassion, knowing that through the annual UJA Campaign, we are building a strong, inclusive, and resilient Jewish future—one where every member is cherished, every voice is heard, and no one is ever left behind. Chag Sameach!

B’Shalom,
