On Aug. 3, 2026, at approximately 3 p.m., a male reportedly climbed the metal security fencing around the Israel pavilion at the Edmonton Heritage Festival and cut the tent with a knife. Security guards apprehended the suspect until on-site EPS members arrived and arrested him.
The EPS Hate Crimes Unit conducted a thorough investigation and found insufficient evidence to indicate that the crime was motivated by hate.
Abdimalik Jama, 29, has been charged with mischief under $5,000 and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. He was released on an Undertaking with conditions not to possess knives or other edged weapons.
“We thank Edmonton Police Service for its thorough investigation and for the work of all those involved in advancing this case from the Israel Pavilion at Edmonton Heritage Festival Association,” stated the Jewish Federation of Edmonton on Facebook.
“We remain committed to standing against hate and antisemitism in our community and will continue to follow the court process with interest and respect.”
