(Calgary) – After 40 years running a real estate brokerage, I have learned a few things.
Markets go up and markets go down. Interest rates rise and fall. Neighbourhoods change, technology changes, marketing changes, and every few years someone announces a revolutionary new way of selling real estate that is apparently going to change our business forever.
What doesn’t change is the importance of good service, sound advice, integrity, hard work and earning the trust of your clients.
Those things never go out of style.
Perhaps that is one reason Gizella Davis is celebrating an extraordinary milestone this year: 50 years in real estate.
Gizella began her career in 1976. There were no cellphones, internet, electronic signatures, websites or virtual tours. Listings arrived in printed books. Offers were written by hand. If you wanted to speak with someone, you picked up the telephone—or went to see them.
Real estate was a relationship business. Fifty years later, I believe the best real estate still is. That is something Gizella and I have always agreed upon, and it is very much part of what we believe at Century 21 Bamber Realty: this business begins and ends with the people we serve.
Over five decades, she has experienced virtually every kind of Calgary real estate market imaginable. She has worked through booms, recessions, soaring interest rates, oil crashes, bidding wars and markets when simply finding a buyer required patience, creativity and considerable determination.
Gizella has adapted to enormous changes in our industry, but she has never abandoned the principles on which she built her business.
Know your market. Know your properties. Tell your clients what they need to hear, not simply what they want to hear. Answer the telephone. Show up. Pay attention to details. Negotiate hard. And remember that behind every transaction are people making one of the largest financial—and emotional—decisions of their lives.
It sounds simple. It isn’t.
Those principles also reflect what the Century 21 name has long represented: professionalism, knowledge, service and a commitment to helping people confidently navigate one of life’s biggest decisions. A brand can set a standard, but ultimately it is the people behind the name who give that standard meaning.
There have been plenty of fads in real estate, and I suspect there will be plenty more.Marketing strategies change. New technologies promise to replace old ways of doing business.
But there is no technology that replaces experience, and no marketing strategy more powerful than having a client trust you enough to recommend you to someone they care about.
Gizella’s career is proof of that.
Her business has always been built largely through relationships and referrals. Clients returned when it was time to move again. Then their children called. There is something particularly meaningful about receiving a telephone call from someone who says, “My parents told me to call you.”
That is a reputation earned over a lifetime.
Over the years, Gizella has guided clients through first purchases, growing families, relocations, divorces, estates, downsizing and moves into senior living. Her clients remember her knowledge and negotiating ability, but they also talk about her warmth, humour and ability to bring perspective when emotions run high.
One former client described how Gizella’s “humour and warmth and sense of perspective” helped balance the emotion and drama of a real estate transaction.
Another family learned their mother had left instructions that, when the time came to sell her home, they were to call Gizella.
Those stories say something important about the kind of professional Gizella is—and about the kind of service we strive to provide at Century 21 Bamber Realty. Our profession asks people to place an extraordinary amount of trust in us. We owe them expertise and professionalism, certainly, but we also owe them honesty, care and the confidence that someone is firmly in their corner.
Success can be measured in sales, awards and numbers.
Legacy is measured differently.
It is found in the people who remember how you treated them. It is in clients who return 20 or 30 years later, and in the children and grandchildren who call because your name has become part of their family’s real estate story. It is in the colleagues you have influenced, the community you have served and the standards you have helped uphold within your profession.
By that measure, Gizella has built quite a legacy.
And her legacy is still being written.
Today, Gizella continues to actively serve Calgary clients alongside Jemma Stephenson, sharing not only five decades of market knowledge, but the values that have sustained her career: work hard, know your business, tell people the truth, protect their interests and never forget that service is personal.
Those are also values we are proud to have associated with the Century 21 Bamber name. Our industry has changed enormously, and the Century 21 brand has evolved along with it, but the purpose behind what we do remains remarkably consistent: helping people make important real estate decisions with knowledgeable professionals they can trust.
Real estate looks remarkably different from the business Gizella entered in 1976. The next generation will undoubtedly practice it differently again.
Congratulations, Gizella, on an extraordinary 50 years in real estate. It is a remarkable professional achievement, but more importantly, it represents five decades of relationships, trust and service to Calgary families.
