Purim at CJA: A Celebration of Community, Tradition, and Giving

Purim at CJA was an amazing celebration!

(Calgary) – Purim at CJA was a vibrant and meaningful celebration, filled with excitement, tradition, and a strong sense of togetherness. Throughout the festivities, our students embraced the four mitzvot of Purim: listening to the story of Purim in the Megillah, giving mishloach manot, donating to those in need, and celebrating with joy. These important traditions were woven into every part of our celebration, making it a truly special experience for all.

The month of Adar brought a festive atmosphere to the school, starting with the delicious aroma of freshly baked hamantaschen. Thanks to our incredible PA and dedicated parent volunteers, students and staff enjoyed this traditional Purim treat, adding an extra layer of sweetness to the holiday.

Leading up to Purim, the excitement grew with a week of fun spirit days. Students showed off their creativity with Colour Blast Day, rocked their coolest accessories for Sunglasses Day, and enjoyed everyone’s favourite — Hoodies and Sweats Day. The energy in the school was contagious, as laughter and anticipation filled the air.

Purim is also a time for giving and connecting with others. Our Grade 6 students had a special opportunity to bring the Purim spirit beyond our school walls, visiting Trinity Lodge to deliver mishloach manot and sing Purim songs for the residents. It was heartwarming to see different generations come together to celebrate, demonstrating how the essence of Purim extends far beyond the classroom.

On Purim morning, the excitement was at its peak as students and parents lined the halls for our annual Purim Parade. Festive music played as students proudly showed off their creative and colourful costumes, from classic Purim characters like Queen Esther and Mordechai to superheroes, animals, and everything in between. The energy and enthusiasm set the perfect tone for the day.

Following the parade, our Grade 1-9 students gathered for the Megillah reading, beautifully led by our Grade 6 students. They did an amazing job bringing the Purim story to life, helping everyone fulfill one of the holiday’s key mitzvot. Meanwhile, our youngest students in the Early Years program were treated to a magical experience— literally! A special magic show captivated their imaginations before they enjoyed their own version of the Megillah reading, enthusiastically performed by their teachers.

Mishloach manot is an important part of Purim.

Throughout the day, students took part in the meaningful tradition of creating and exchanging mishloach manot. This act of giving reinforced the importance of kindness and connection within our school community. Seeing the excitement on students’ faces as they shared their beautifully prepared gift bags was a true highlight of the celebration.

The afternoon was all about fun as students enjoyed the highly anticipated Purim carnival. With the help of our incredible grade 6-9 students, the carnival was a huge success, filled with laughter, exciting games, and non-stop entertainment. It was the perfect way to end the festivities, as students celebrated together in a lively and joyful atmosphere.

Purim at CJA was more than just a celebration—it was a reflection of the values that make our community so special. Through fun, laughter, and meaningful traditions, we came together to honor the spirit of Purim in a way that will leave lasting memories. The energy of the holiday continues to resonate within our school, reminding us of the power of kindness, connection, and tradition.
