Investing in Advocacy: Calgary Jewish Federation Responds to Urgent Community Needs

Rob Nagus, CEO Calgary Jewish Federation

by Rob Nagus

(Calgary) – As antisemitism rises and public discourse becomes increasingly polarized, Calgary Jewish Federation (CJF) is taking decisive action to ensure that Jewish voices are protected, empowered, and heard. Recognizing the urgent need for strong leadership and strategic advocacy, CJF is expanding its efforts – starting with a critical investment in people.

To lead this charge, CJF is seeking a visionary Director of Advocacy and Community Relations – a newly elevated leadership role dedicated to driving systemic change, strengthening relationships, and addressing the pressing issues facing our
community today.

This is more than a staffing decision – it’s a reaffirmation of our core values. We are doubling down on our commitment to stand up for Jewish life, foster meaningful connections, and respond proactively to hate and discrimination.

A key example of this advocacy in action is CJF’s work supporting students and educators confronting antisemitism in Calgary schools. From providing tailored resources and training to directly assisting those affected, CJF is helping teachers navigate difficult conversations and empowering students who face antisemitism firsthand.

Through partnerships with school boards, educational workshops, and systemic advocacy, we can create a lasting impact – especially where it matters most: in classrooms and communities shaping the next generation.

The incoming Director, working alongside myself and our dedicated volunteers on both the CJF Board and Community Relations Committee, will play a pivotal role in amplifying these initiatives and forging strong relationships with government, interfaith groups, Jewish organizations, and the wider public. This leader will help guide policy engagement, assist in managing crisis response, and represent the Jewish community in public discourse – ensuring our voices are respected in every arena.

We’re calling on our community to help us find the right person for this vital mission – someone with a passion for justice, outstanding communication skills, and a proven background in advocacy or public affairs.

Whether by sharing this opportunity, nominating a candidate, or staying actively engaged, your support is key to ensuring that Jewish Calgary remains resilient, vibrant, and united in the face of today’s challenges.

Together, we’re investing in the future – one grounded in dignity, dialogue, and the enduring strength of our shared values.

B’Shalom.
