CJF: Standing firm against hate this Chanukah

by Lisa Libin and Rob Nagus

(Calgary) – As we gather with loved ones this evening to welcome Chanukah, we do so this year with heavy hearts and fierce resolve. We are devastated and outraged by the horrific terrorist attack at a community celebration on Bondi Beach in Australia, where at least 11 innocent lives were stolen. Our hearts are with the victims, the injured, their families, and the entire Australian Jewish community as they mourn and begin to heal.

In the wake of this tragedy, Calgary Jewish Federation is taking immediate action. We have been in direct contact with the Calgary Police ServiceRCMP, and Jewish Federations across Canada. We are actively coordinating, sharing intelligence, and there will be increased police presence at Jewish events in Calgary, including Chanukah celebrations, as part of our unwavering commitment to community security. We are grateful for the strong partnership and rapid response of local law enforcement, who continue to stand with us during this difficult time.

Moments like these remind us why Chanukah matters so deeply. Chanukah does not promise a world without darkness – it demands that we bring light into it. It calls on us to stand tall, to be proud, and to refuse to hide.

In this spirit, we urge our entire community and our allies to stand together at Chabad Lubavitch of Alberta‘s public Chanukah Candle Lighting at City Hall at 5:30pm on Monday, December 15. By gathering publicly and proudly, we send an unmistakable message: we will not be intimidated. We will stand together – as Jews, as Calgarians, as people of conscience – united in courage, faith, and defiance of hate.

Our community has proven, time and again, that we are strongest when we stand shoulder to shoulder. Let this Chanukah be a reminder that light is not passive, it is powerful. Together, we will illuminate even the darkest corners of fear with unity, pride, and resolve.

May the lights of the Chanukiah bring comfort to those who mourn, strength to those who protect, and the courage for all of us to keep shining – especially when it is hardest to do so. We look forward to seeing all of you tomorrow evening.

Chag Urim Sameach. Wishing you and your loved ones a bright, safe, and meaningful Chanukah.
