(AJNews) – A Halpern-Akiva Academy alumni made Western Hockey League fans jump out of their seats this season. That isn’t a sentence you’ll read that often, but it was the truth anytime the Prince Albert Raiders and their star forward Aiden Oiring took the ice this year.
In his third season in Prince Albert, Oiring really found his groove. He started the campaign as an Assistant Captain with the team and went on to finish second on the team in scoring, and 15th in the WHL. Getting the chance to really play an offensive game with players like Tomas Mrsic (St. Louis Blues draft pick) helped Aiden take his game to the next level.
Oiring’s 29 goals and 85 points were enough to help him secure the next chapter in his hockey story; in January he committed to play for the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Aiden’s on-ice success didn’t stop there though as he helped his team make it to the second round of the WHL playoffs this year, compiling 14 points in 11 games, which included a 9-game point streak.
The first round of the WHL playoffs is right where we caught up with Aiden Oiring. Ahead of game 3 vs the Edmonton Oil Kings, Alberta Jewish News Junior Reporters Jackson Mailhot (JM), and Asher Muscat (AM) were able to meet and interview Aiden and learn a little bit more about this inspiring elite Jewish athlete. And yes, he scored a goal that night too!
Aiden (AO) was nice enough to give the Junior Reporters some time, discuss hockey superstitions, favourite NHL and WHL teams, equipment choices (he tapes toe to heel), advice for young Jewish athletes, and more.
JM: Who is your favourite Jewish NHL player?
AO: That’s a tough one. Right now I think (Zach) Hyman. He’s just playing so well and playing with the best player in the world, so he’s pretty good.
AM: What is your favourite Jewish holiday?
AO: Gotta be Chanukah for sure.
AM: What does being an Assistant Captain mean to you?
AO: It means a lot. It means that they (his team) look up to me. It means I have good leadership skills, and I’m happy my teammates look up to me.
