(AJNews) – What is the most important part of a bar or bat mitzvah? Is it the prayers and ceremony or the Dvar Torah? Maybe it’s all about the party? Wait… no… there must be more to it. At the age of twelve or thirteen a Jewish child becomes responsible for his/her actions and choices. Many prepare for a year or more to reach this moment of independence and maturity, but it doesn’t stop once the party is over. The Bar/Bat mitzvah celebration is the beginning of one’s Jewish adulthood and just the start fulfilling mitzvot. A Bar/Bat mitzvah project is an important way to put this learning and their values into action. It is the child’s first chance to fulfill the mitzvah of Tzedakah (giving to charity) and Tikkun Olam (making the world a better place).

I have chosen to team up with JNF Edmonton to raise funds for the Ashdod Rehabilitation and Therapy Centre (the ART Centre). This project is important to me because this hospital cares for children with cancer, children with disabilities, and victims of post-traumatic stress disorder. The ART Centre puts together programs to help make life as fun and normal for patients as possible. By helping patients in this way, it makes their journey a little easier.

This project is special to me because helping others is one of my core values. I like to help at home by caring for my siblings, at school by helping teachers and students, and showing care by baking for others. I really like kids and love to see them happy and having fun. Children with cancer and disabilities have a lot of challenges and deserve to be as comfortable as possible while going through treatment. I have personally seen how cancer can affect the patient and their family, friends, and community. My Uncle, Nathan Reboh z’L, had brain cancer but he always tried to stay positive and active, having as much fun as possible, despite the illness. My Uncle Nathan z’L inspires me to make the most out of every situation, good or difficult, to try new things, and to always smile throughout life’s moments.

I love children and I love Israel. I want to help make the world a better place by spreading kindness and helping others in need. I am glad to be able to fundraise for this important project by donating a portion of my bat mitzvah gifts. In addition, at my Bat Mitzvah celebration, guests will have the opportunity to decorate and assemble care kits with art supplies and activities for patients at the ART Centre. As well, we will be making a video of well wishes and highlights to share with the children, so they know we are thinking of them during my simcha. It is important to remember that even during our happiest moments, our homeland, Israel, has many challenges and heartache.

To support the Ashdod Rehabilitation and Therapy Centre project, you can be a part of the June 18, 2025 JNF Edmonton Gala by donating, sponsoring, or attending the event. More information can be found at jnf.ca/edmonton.
